"Historically New: Obscura Film Photography"
In my exhibition piece, "Historically New," I explore the archives of John Curtin, immersing myself in the deep narratives housed within the esteemed John Curtin Prime Ministerial Library. As I delved into these archives, a camera caught my attention, the mesmerizing brownie box camera. Deeply rooted in its historical significance, this encounter led me to uncover a word interwoven with photography's heritage and brimming with interconnected meanings: "Obscura." With my fascination ignited, I ventured on a phenomenal journey, tracing the realms of this evocative word. This aether brought me full circle, inspiring me to construct a camera that pays tribute to the brownie box's storied past while steering it into the modern era. Through 3D printing, I came across a 3D designer who created something similar to the Brownie, however, I knew I would need to modify it in order to capture abstract imagery on 120 film.
Guided by the essence of "Obscura," I ventured into the realm of abstract photography, capturing captivating images that weave together the interplay of light and shadow. With every exposure, I sought to encapsulate intriguing light patterns, unlocking the mysterious and enchanting world hidden within. I also had the privilege of using a precious family heirloom, Yes, I happened to own the brownie camera, a timeless treasure that landed in my lap from another time. Through this serendipitous connection to the past, I undertook a journey into history, capturing the very essence of the university that would make John Curtin himself proud today. In my quest through time exploring the university's structures, I found myself drawn to the abstract buildings, looking for the interplay of light and darkness that resonated with the word "Obscura." This exploration illuminated the architectural dimension and I discovered a hidden beauty within it.
By personally developing the images captured through both cameras, I gained a profound appreciation for the limitations of finite frames, juxtaposed against the boundless possibilities accessible in our modern age. This process evoked a newfound understanding of the delicate balance between capturing fleeting moments and the endless potential that technology now allows us to explore.
Look into this visual adventure through "Historically New," and “Metempsychosis” where past archives come alive and merge seamlessly with the present, giving forgotten narratives a much-needed revival. My sincere hope is that this exhibition sparks a genuine appreciation for how history, art, and the amazing power of photography are all connected in a magical way.
